The Right Stuff
MAIN STORY 1947, 1952–1963
From Chuck Yeager’s experimental flights to the Mercury Seven, pilots and families face a new kind of risk and celebrity.
What you’ll learn How test flying, politics and public image shaped Project Mercury. Treat the characterization of Gus Grissom with care: the film’s suggestion of panic is not an established explanation of his capsule’s hatch accident.
Story dates & historical context
The 1947 X-1 sequence is a substantial opening chapter. AFI’s synopsis then moves to Edwards in 1952 and follows Mercury to Gordon Cooper’s 1963 flight, so 1948–1951 stay empty. Use the 1983 Philip Kaufman film, not the 2020 TV adaptation. The film also exaggerates the danger to Glenn’s mission; it is a drama rather than a literal mission record.
02
MAIN STORY 1961–1962
Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson work through technical problems and racial and gender barriers at Langley.
What you’ll learn The mathematics, computing and often overlooked people behind early American spaceflight. The film compresses careers and invents or combines characters and confrontations; its chronology should not replace the women’s biographies.
Story dates & historical context
The central film narrative concentrates on 1961–1962 and Glenn’s orbit. A childhood prologue is excluded. Vaughan became a supervisor in 1949 and Jackson an engineer in 1958, earlier than the film’s compressed story suggests. Those real dates do not extend the film’s story bars.
03
First Man
MAIN STORY 1961–1969
Neil Armstrong’s professional life and family grief unfold across the testing, training and missions leading to Apollo 11.
What you’ll learn Why reaching the Moon took years of incremental flight experience, engineering and personal sacrifice. Its intimate reading of Armstrong’s grief is a dramatic interpretation, including the unverified bracelet scene on the Moon.
Story dates & historical context
The Smithsonian identifies the film’s span as 1961–1969. Armstrong’s Gemini 8 flight in 1966 falls within that continuous career narrative. The 1965 event connection introduces the broader Gemini program; it does not claim Armstrong made Leonov’s first spacewalk.
04
From the Earth to the Moon
MAIN STORY 1961–1972
Twelve dramatic chapters follow Apollo through astronauts, engineers, controllers, geologists and families.
What you’ll learn The program beyond a single heroic flight: design choices, failure investigations, training and lunar science. Watch the complete series for breadth; it overlaps First Man and Apollo 13, which offer more concentrated alternatives.
Story dates & historical context
The main historical story runs from 1961 to the last Apollo landing in 1972. The final episode’s scenes about Georges Méliès and his 1902 film are a parallel artistic frame, not an extension of Apollo’s coverage. All 12 episodes are included, budgeted at about 60 minutes each; editions vary. It remains scripted drama, with reconstructed dialogue and composite storytelling.
05
Apollo 13
MAIN STORY 1970
A routine lunar expedition becomes an emergency, with three astronauts and teams on Earth trying to bring a damaged spacecraft home.
What you’ll learn The practical work of mission control, limited resources and engineering under pressure. The broad rescue is historical, while dialogue and interpersonal tension are shaped for the film.
Story dates & historical context
The central story is the 1970 preparation, flight and return. The opening remembrance of Apollo 1 and the Apollo 11 television celebration establish background and do not create earlier coverage bars. Use Ron Howard’s 1995 feature; the budget is 140 minutes. This is an optional close-up of ground also covered differently in the miniseries.
06
The Farthest
MAIN STORY 1972–2012
Voyager’s scientists and engineers recall sending two small spacecraft past giant planets and toward interstellar space.
What you’ll learn Gravity assists, long-lived engineering and the scientific surprises of robotic exploration. Archive material and retrospective interviews tell the mission; interviews filmed decades later do not extend the historical span. The encounters are now separated on the timeline so Voyager 1’s route through Titan is not confused with Voyager 2’s onward flight to Uranus and Neptune.
Story dates & historical context
The PBS transcript explicitly dates mission preparation to 1972 and follows the 1977 launches, planetary encounters through 1989 and Voyager 1’s 2012 heliopause crossing. This is a mission-history envelope, not a claim that every intervening year receives a scene. Budget the 121-minute feature; the linked PBS presentation is a shorter 97-minute broadcast cut. “Left the solar system” in publicity means the heliosphere here, not the Sun’s full gravitational domain. This 2017 film cannot cover Voyager 2’s 2018 heliopause crossing or later operations; those have separate context stops and a later documentary.

Wubbo: een Hollander in de ruimte
MAIN STORY 1977–1985
An Andere Tijden episode follows Ockels from a Dutch recruitment advertisement through years of training and setbacks to Spacelab D1.
What you’ll learn How a Dutch scientist reached space through ESA and NASA, and how national enthusiasm related to a European research mission. Dutch-language interviews and archive give this route a local perspective.
Story dates & historical context
The broadcaster’s account dates the recruitment advertisement to 1977, followed by European selection in 1978 and the 1985 flight. Its brief introduction anticipating Kuipers’s 2011 launch is excluded. The page gives 30 minutes and December 2011 publication/broadcast information. A matching IMDb episode identity and score were not verified, so the dash means unverified rather than zero. The broadcaster and museum catalogue contain inconsistent shorthand dates; ESA’s 30 October 1985 launch date is used for the historical stop.
08
Challenger: The Final Flight
MAIN STORY 1978–1986
Engineers, officials and relatives reconstruct the Challenger disaster and the decisions that preceded it.
What you’ll learn How technical warnings, launch expectations and institutional judgment can interact. The four-part documentary centers people and decisions; it does not cover the entire Shuttle era or the later Columbia accident.
Story dates & historical context
The main historical arc begins with the new astronaut generation selected in 1978 and builds through the 1986 loss and investigation. Earlier program archive and later remembrance are context rather than extra story bars. The start is an editorial boundary, not an exact date for every archival image. All four episodes are included: Netflix lists 44, 41, 41 and 52 minutes, totaling 178 minutes.
09
Good Night Oppy
MAIN STORY c. 2000–2019
The teams behind Spirit and Opportunity build, land and care for robotic explorers that outlast their planned missions.
What you’ll learn How rover operations become field geology at a distance, and how discoveries accumulate over years. The surface journeys include visual-effects reconstructions; these are not continuous camera footage shot by an observer on Mars.
Story dates & historical context
The span includes the rover project’s development from around 2000, the 2003 launches, 2004 landings and the recovery attempts ending in 2019. The development boundary is approximate. Opportunity’s last signal was in June 2018; the mission declaration came in February 2019. The film’s present-day interviews are excluded from the bar. The early planning material is not intended as a year-by-year history.
10
Return to Space
MAIN STORY c. 2002–2020
NASA astronauts, their families and SpaceX teams prepare for Demo-2 while the film retraces the company’s earlier rocket development.
What you’ll learn The progression from Falcon 1 to Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon, alongside NASA’s role in buying and supporting commercial transport. The filmmakers have close access to the company; this is a participant-centered account, not a comprehensive audit of private spaceflight.
Story dates & historical context
The historical envelope begins around SpaceX’s 2002 founding and culminates in the 2020 Demo-2 mission and splashdown. Netflix describes a nearly twenty-year journey and explicitly identifies Falcon 1, reusable Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon. The early boundary is approximate and the film jumps over years. Earlier Apollo/Shuttle archive supplies background. It does not cover the 2021 Inspiration4 flight or Starship’s later integrated tests.
11
Cosmic Encounters
MAIN STORY c. 2011–2012
André Kuipers films life aboard the ISS while Alexander Gerst trains on Earth for a future mission.
What you’ll learn Dutch participation within European human spaceflight: research, daily life, training and cooperation at the station. This was made for ZDF and ARTE, with a Dutch astronaut as one guide; it is not a survey of the entire Dutch space sector.
Story dates & historical context
The central onboard footage belongs to Kuipers’s 2011–2012 PromISSe mission. Gerst’s training anticipates his 2014 flight; the flight itself is not depicted and does not extend the bar to 2014. The 2011 start of the combined preparation/mission envelope is approximate. ZDF’s international catalogue lists a 50-minute edition, used here; IMDb and some home-video listings give 55 minutes. Also circulated as Encounter in Space / Rencontre dans l’espace. The 2012 production is distinct from later distribution and classification dates.
12
It's Quieter in the Twilight
MAIN STORY c. 2019–2020
A small Voyager flight team keeps the probes working as hardware ages, expertise becomes harder to replace and the pandemic interrupts ordinary routines.
What you’ll learn What exploration looks like decades after launch: patient troubleshooting, ground infrastructure and the people who hold a mission’s knowledge. Pair it with The Farthest for the difference between spectacular flybys and long-term operations.
Story dates & historical context
Director Billy Miossi says filming began in June 2019 and continued for about eighteen months. The approximate 2019–2020 bar follows that observed operational period; old launch footage and the engineers’ career memories do not turn it into a continuous 1977–2022 history. The 2018 Voyager 2 crossing is background. The film premiered at SXSW in 2022; many platforms label its wider release 2023. Apple’s listing rounds the running time to 84 minutes; other listings give 83. Later Voyager repairs are not presumed to appear in this film.

Countdown: Inspiration4 Mission to Space
MAIN STORY 2021
Five episodes follow four privately funded crew members from selection through training to a three-day journey aboard Crew Dragon.
What you’ll learn How a private orbital mission is organized and how its crew prepares. The charity and inspiration narrative comes from close access to the participants; the series does not establish that private orbital flight is broadly affordable or accessible.
Story dates & historical context
The central mission and preparation take place in 2021. Childhood stories and personal biographies are framing material, not extra mission years. All five episodes are included. Netflix lists 47, 46, 48, 39 and 68 minutes, totaling 248 minutes; episode five includes launch, flight and return. Florida’s 15–18 September dates correspond to a launch after midnight UTC on 16 September. This is Inspiration4, not the later Polaris Dawn mission.
