About the selection & IMDb ratings

Five films and one complete three-part series. About 15 hours in total, using the restored 227-minute Lawrence of Arabia. IMDb scores were checked on 26 October 2026 and can change; they guide the viewing choices, not their historical reliability.

Europe on edge

Imperial competition, nationalism, military planning and rival alliances made Europe vulnerable to a crisis. None made a world war automatic: the decisions of summer 1914 mattered. Start with 37 Days for those decisions; its main plot begins in 1914, not 1913.

The quick war that wasn’t

Germany’s advance through Belgium and France was checked at the Marne. Attempts to outflank the opposing armies helped produce a continuous Western Front. Joyeux Noël introduces the soldiers living with the resulting trench war; it does not reconstruct the Marne campaign.

Verdun and the Somme

Huge offensives wore down armies for limited gains. Verdun tested French endurance; the Somme was intended to help break the deadlock and relieve pressure on France. Read this before 1917: that film shows a later phase of the Western Front, not either 1916 battle.

America enters; Russia unravels

The United States declared war on Germany on 6 April. Revolutions in Russia brought down the tsar and then brought the Bolsheviks to power; Russia made peace with the Central Powers in March 1918. These changes reshaped the balance of the war.

Context stop: none of these six titles directly tells the story of US entry or the Russian revolutions. The date of 1917’s mission is not evidence that it covers them.

The fighting stops

The Armistice with Germany took effect at 11 a.m. on 11 November. All Quiet on the Western Front contrasts negotiations with life at the front. Its final ordered assault is dramatic invention, not a reconstruction of a documented last-minute German offensive.

37 Days

MAIN STORY 1914

1914

Diplomats and rulers try to control a crisis that keeps slipping beyond them. Watch all three episodes: this is the political opening to the route.

What you’ll learn How choices, alliances and mobilisation turned a Balkan crisis into a European war. A tense chamber drama rather than a battle spectacle.

Story dates & historical context

28 June–4 August 1914: the assassination and the diplomatic crisis ending with Britain’s declaration of war. Prewar context is discussed, but earlier years are not a substantial separate plot. The 1913 event note supplies background rather than extending this bar.

Joyeux Noël

MAIN STORY 1914

1914

French, Scottish and German soldiers share an unofficial Christmas ceasefire. Warmth and music briefly cut through the trench lines.

What you’ll learn The human scale of the early Western Front, and why the Christmas truces were remarkable precisely because they were local and temporary.

Story dates & historical context

The central action is in December 1914, with the outbreak of war establishing the characters earlier that year. It combines fictional characters and incidents; the short disciplinary aftermath does not justify stretching the main-story bar into another year.

Gallipoli

MAIN STORY 1915

1915

Two Australian runners enlist, train in Egypt and reach the Gallipoli peninsula. Their friendship gives the campaign’s tragedy a personal centre.

What you’ll learn Why WW1 extended beyond France and Belgium, how imperial ties carried Australians into the war, and the cost of the Gallipoli campaign.

Story dates & historical context

The Australian recruitment story, Egyptian training and August fighting at the Nek all belong to 1915. Do not extend coverage to the January 1916 evacuation. The film misleadingly directs blame towards British command: an Australian officer ordered the final charge at the Nek.

Lawrence of Arabia

MAIN STORY 1916–1918

191619171918

T. E. Lawrence joins Arab forces fighting the Ottoman Empire, from desert crossings and Aqaba to Damascus. Use the restored version; the intermission makes a natural two-evening break.

What you’ll learn The Arab Revolt and the tension between local ambitions and British imperial strategy. An expansive change of scale from the trenches, seen through a heavily dramatised British protagonist.

Story dates & historical context

The central wartime narrative runs from Lawrence’s assignment in 1916 to Damascus in 1918, including Aqaba in 1917. Exclude the brief opening death and memorial scenes in 1935. The bar does not promise continuous year-by-year coverage. Runtime is 227 minutes for the restored edition; cuts differ.

1917

MAIN STORY 1917

1917

Two British soldiers must carry a warning across abandoned trenches and occupied ground. Its apparently continuous camera movement makes the journey unusually immediate.

What you’ll learn The geography, isolation and communication problems of the Western Front after Germany’s withdrawal. The fictional mission supplies urgency without trying to explain the whole war.

Story dates & historical context

The mission takes place on 6–7 April 1917. Its historical setting is the withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line. It does not depict Verdun or the Somme in 1916, America’s entry, the Russian revolutions, or the later Passchendaele offensive.

All Quiet on the Western Front

MAIN STORY 1917–1918

19171918

A German teenager’s enthusiasm for enlistment is crushed by trench warfare. The 2022 adaptation follows his comrades alongside the negotiations to end the fighting.

What you’ll learn The German soldiers’ experience of exhaustion and the distance between political decisions and individual survival. Finish here for the Armistice, despite the film’s overlap with 1917.

Story dates & historical context

A substantial opening follows Paul’s enlistment in spring 1917; the story then jumps eighteen months to November 1918, where most of the film takes place. Both years belong to the central plot. The fictional final assault is a dramatic device, and the film is not a literal reconstruction of Remarque’s novel or the Armistice negotiations.

HOW TO READ THIS

One story can cross many years.

The top chart compares every film against the same year axis. In the event timeline, each film occupies a parallel lane and its coloured bar stretches across its main-story years. Separate periods leave a gap. Event dots align with their historical cards, including contextual connections outside a film’s main-story span. A connection labelled “Context” or “Background” does not mean the film depicts that event.

Select any movie name or span to open its details without leaving the timeline. The modal includes its IMDb score, story-year strip, historical caveats and sources. Coloured cells mark main-story coverage and pale cells mark years outside it. Gaps stay visible. Brief prologues, framing interviews and later-life epilogues are excluded. IMDb scores describe audience reception, not historical accuracy.

The rest of the picture

This is an introduction through drama, with British, French, German, Australian and Arab-front perspectives. It leans towards the Western Front. The Eastern Front, Africa, the war at sea, civilian life and colonial soldiers deserve more attention than six titles can give them. Event notes fill in essential context without pretending the films cover everything.

The November 1918 Armistice stopped the fighting with Germany; the peace settlement followed in 1919. This route ends at the ceasefire. Films are selected for engaging viewing, not as substitutes for the historical sources.
