Why these makers and cars? Selection, scoring & sources ↗

Editorial nominations first. Design gets the greatest weight.

This is a compact, design-led introduction, not a definitive ranking of manufacturers. The makers are the union of the selected cars’ marques: every inclusion has an explicit nomination or design appraisal in Top Gear, Autocar, Car and Driver, Hagerty, evo or Auto Express. Brand order follows first appearance here. BMC’s original Mini and the later MINI marque share one family; Benz is grouped with its successor Mercedes-Benz.

The score is a transparent evidence index, not a reviewer’s rating: design contributes up to 60 points, documented industry influence 30, and a second independent publication 10. A source explicitly describing radical form or packaging receives 60 design points; a positive or recognisable design appraisal receives 30; no design appraisal receives 0. Industry points require an explicit historical-impact claim. A second article from the same publication does not earn corroboration points. Every car’s breakdown and rationale appear in its detail view. These classifications are a synthesis of the cited writing, not scores awarded by those publications.

Only editorially recognised candidates enter the shortlist; design-led examples take priority within this bounded introduction. Honorable mentions preserve further published nominations for your review. There are 38 model families / 23 makers = 1.65 cars per maker, below the requested cap of 2.5 (at most 57 main entries). Evolution entries inside the modals do not inflate the main count.

Reading the dates and the pictures

Timeline dates mark a production model’s introduction or first production year; the detail view distinguishes an earlier unveiling from a model year when relevant. The Cybertruck starts in 2023, not at its 2019 prototype reveal. A revival or racing derivative is labelled explicitly. Small facelifts and near-identical trims are condensed; exclusions are explained for every family.

Photographs are credited individually. Three-quarter views are preferred where available. Historic archive and contemporary Wikimedia photographs are used when official launch images could not be verified; they are not presented as launch photography. Original file descriptions, photographers and licenses remain accessible from each gallery. Backgrounds and angles vary with the surviving material.

Video links identify the car or generation actually filmed. Where no official YouTube upload was verified, the Top Gear series and episode are provided; some old-car films are historical features rather than full reviews. Press articles establish the selection; linked model histories support generation dates and specifications.
